"HELMHOLTZ-FUNK" is a concert-length work for two pianos and ring modulation, exploring sound, language, and spirituality. Taking the German meanings of ‘funk’ as ‘radio’ or ‘message’, this work is a mapping of the Hebrew phonemes and speech rhythms of Psalm 119 onto two pianos. The instruments are tuned according to a keyboard temperament envisioned by Herman von Helmholtz and filtered through a digital ring modulator precisely tuned in accordance with the principals of just intonation. The piece is an attempt to explore the sonorities of tuned distortion, a meta-commentary on an iconic biblical text, and a meditation on finding meaning through an act of sheer obedience.
